Let’s Talk

Here are some counselling issues some people may seek therapy for:

Depression

We have all felt sad from time to time, and even had bad days or weeks. However, experiencing hopelessness or despair for long periods of time can affect your daily functioning and result in depression. Symptoms may include lack of motivation, low energy, withdrawal from  activities and/or relationships and sleep issues.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of worry and fear of a real or perceived threat. It can cause people to ruminate in thoughts of worst-case scenarios and to prepare for situations with anticipation and apprehension. Chronic anxiety can have an impact on our physical body, relationships, and performance.

Relationships

Human beings are social creatures and thrive on connection. We have many types of relationships including professional, intimate, sibling to sibling, parent-child, and more. Some examples of issues include: communication, betrayal, trust, attachment, roles and addictions.

Grief/Loss

Life is full of all sorts of loss. These losses can include death, relationships, a fantasy of how we wanted life to be, employment, and even a loss of identity. Grief is the response to the loss we have experienced.

Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence, also known as Family Violence, occurs when one person uses power and control to intimidate, cause fear and abuse to another person. The abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual, verbal, and financial. It may include a single act of violence or a repeated pattern.

Bullying

Bullying can be similar to abuse and occurs when one person uses their power to harm another person with fear, intimidation, threats, and exclusion. This can happen at school, in work environments, within peer groups, sports teams and in cyberspace.

Addictions

An addiction can be defined as a compulsive behaviour that results in short-term pleasure, but has potential for long-term negative impacts on physical health, emotional well-being, relationships and day to day functioning. Addictions can include: substance abuse, caffiene, food, gambling, video games, or pornography.

Trauma

Trauma is a negative experience that has a great impact on us which may impair our ability to cope. Trauma is often interpreted differently by each person based on how they personally define and make sense of their experience. Examples of traumatic events can include: abuse, sexual violence, bullying, death, natural disasters, neglect, or motor vehicle accidents.

Perfectionism

Aiming for perfectionism can cause anxiety and disappointment. This is becuase we can get caught up in unrealistic expectations of ourselves, others, and life. Since perfectionism is unattainable, it can cause feelings of guilt and self-criticism because we believe we have fallen short of what our mind imagined as an ideal outcome.
